Frequently Asked Questions

For Junior or Early-Career Construction Professionals:
A two-page CV is considered the ideal length. This allows you to showcase your qualifications, training, and any hands-on experience such as site placements or apprenticeships, without overwhelming the reader.

For Mid to Senior-Level Permanent Construction Roles:
A CV of up to three pages is perfectly acceptable. At this stage, you’ll likely have extensive project experience, technical expertise, and leadership responsibilities that deserve to be clearly detailed.

For Construction Contractors or Interims:
If you work as a construction contractor or interim professional, your CV may need to extend to four pages to accurately list your projects, contract durations, and specific deliverables across different sites or clients.

Consider the Location:
CV standards vary globally. For example, a three-page CV is common in the UK construction market, while the US tends to favour a more concise two-page resume.

No. Do not include a list of references or the phrase "references available upon request" on your construction CV.
These practices are outdated and take up valuable space without adding meaningful value to your application.

Instead, adopt a more modern and impactful approach by adding a “Recommendations” section to your CV. This provides immediate credibility and social proof from respected professionals within the construction industry.

Here’s how to do it effectively:

  • Create a dedicated section at the end of your CV titled “Recommendations.”

  • Select two strong quotes from your LinkedIn recommendations. Choose excerpts that are relevant to the type of construction roles you are targeting, such as projects you’ve contributed to, leadership skills, or technical expertise.

  • Prioritise credibility and impact. The recommendations should come from individuals in positions of authority—such as project managers, site supervisors, or clients—and should highlight specific strengths or achievements rather than generic praise.

  • Format them professionally. Present each as a short quote and include the person’s full name and job title beneath it.

This approach turns references into persuasive testimonials, helping you stand out by showcasing authentic recognition of your skills and achievements in a competitive construction market.

The placement of your qualifications section depends entirely on your career stage.

For Early-Career Professionals:
If you have one year of work experience or less, your qualifications are a key selling point. Place them as the second section on your CV, directly beneath your personal profile or summary.

For Experienced Professionals:
If you have several years of industry experience, your employment history becomes the main focus. Move the qualifications section towards the end of your CV, but still reference your most relevant qualifications (for example, your degree or trade certification) in your opening profile summary.

How to Format Different Types of Qualifications

You can either group all qualifications under one heading or separate them into “Education” and “Professional Qualifications” if you have a larger number to include.

University Education:
List the degree title, your grade in brackets, and the university name.

Example: BSc (Hons) in Construction Management (2:1), University of Leeds

School Education (A-Levels, etc.):
You don’t need to list the name of your school unless it’s particularly well-known. Simply include the qualification type, followed by subjects and grades.

Example: 3 A-Levels: Maths (A), Design & Technology (B), Geography (B)

Professional & Construction Qualifications:
For industry-specific certifications—such as CSCS, SMSTS, NEBOSH, or CIOB membership—list only the qualification name. You don’t need to include the training provider.

Example: CSCS Gold Card – Supervisory
Example: NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety
Example: Member of the Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB)

To keep your construction CV focused and effective, you should provide detailed descriptions for only your most recent four roles. Recruiters have limited time, so this approach ensures they concentrate on your most relevant and up-to-date project experience.

For all positions held before these, create a separate section at the end of your employment history titled “Earlier Career.”

In this section, list your older roles as simple one-liners only. Do not include details about your responsibilities or achievements. Each one-liner should include just three key pieces of information:

  • The date

  • The name of the company

  • Your job title

Example:
2010–2012 | Kier Construction | Assistant Site Manager

This method keeps your CV concise and aligned with best practice — maintaining a total length of up to three pages for permanent construction roles — while still showing a complete career history.

The position of your qualifications section depends entirely on your career stage.

For Early-Career Professionals:
If you have one year of work experience or less, your qualifications are a key selling point. Place them as the second section on your CV, directly beneath your personal profile or summary.

For Experienced Professionals:
If you have significant work experience, your employment history becomes the main focus. Move the qualifications section towards the end of your CV, while still referencing your most relevant qualifications (such as your degree or professional memberships) within your opening profile summary.

How to Format Different Types of Qualifications

You can either group all qualifications into a single section or divide them into “Education” and “Professional Qualifications” if you have several to include.

University Education:
List the degree title, your grade in brackets, and the university name.

Example: BSc (Hons) in Construction Management (2:1), University of Leeds

School Education (A-Levels, etc.):
You don’t need to include the name of your school unless it’s particularly well-known. Simply list the qualification type, followed by subjects and grades.

Example: 3 A-Levels: Maths (A), Design & Technology (B), Geography (B)

Professional & Construction Qualifications:
For industry-specific certifications (e.g. CSCS, SMSTS, NEBOSH, CIOB membership), list only the name of the qualification itself. You don’t need to include the training provider.

Example: CSCS Gold Card – Supervisory
Example: NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety
Example: Member of the Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB)

Start with a Strong Profile Paragraph

Begin with a clear, tailored profile that positions you directly in line with the target role. Use this section to explain your relevance and outline your overall value to the employer, often called your value proposition. For example, you might highlight your expertise in managing large-scale builds, delivering projects to strict deadlines, or ensuring full compliance with health and safety standards.

Add 3 to 4 Key Strength Statements

Include a short list of strength statements that match the job description. Examples could include:

  • Project delivery and site management

  • Budget control and cost reporting

  • Health, safety, and environmental compliance

  • Subcontractor and stakeholder coordination

Include a Key Skills Section

Lay out your key skills in two columns for easy reading. Use construction-specific keywords drawn from the job advert. Examples include:

  • NEC or JCT Contracts

  • Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS)

  • Site Supervision (CSCS or SMSTS)

  • Project Planning and Scheduling (MS Project or Primavera)

Add a Key Projects and Achievements Section

Include a dedicated section summarising your most impressive project work. Use concise STAR-format case studies (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to demonstrate measurable outcomes such as:

  • Delivering a £20m infrastructure project ahead of schedule

  • Reducing material waste by 15% through improved procurement planning

  • Achieving zero safety incidents across multiple high-risk sites

List Your Career History

Focus on the last ten years, presented in reverse chronological order. Include key achievements and results within each role. Avoid listing only duties. This helps to demonstrate your impact rather than simply your responsibilities.

Finish with Education and Certifications

End your CV with details of your education, professional training, and any relevant industry certifications. Examples include:

  • BSc (Hons) in Construction Management

  • CSCS Gold Card

  • SMSTS or NEBOSH Construction Certificate

  • Chartered Membership (MCIOB, RICS, ICE)

You can also include optional extras such as published articles, professional committee involvement, or brief recommendations from previous employers.

1. Not targeting your CV properly

This is the number one issue. Your CV must be sharply focused on the specific role you are applying for. That means your profile paragraph should clearly align with the job title, your value proposition should reflect the project or business goals of the role, and your listed skills must match the key requirements in the job advert. You can then back these up with relevant achievements and case studies. Yet around 70 percent of candidates still send out generic CVs that leave recruiters unsure of their suitability.

2. Failing to show achievements

Many CVs only list responsibilities without demonstrating how well the person performed in the role. Recruiters want proof. They want to see measurable results such as projects delivered ahead of schedule, cost savings achieved, or improvements made to safety or quality. Without clear achievements, your CV becomes a list of duties rather than a convincing argument for why you should be hired.

3. Putting in minimal effort

Too many people throw together their CV without thinking about their audience. They write for themselves instead of the recruiter. A strong CV should reflect the expectations of the reader, not personal preference. For senior construction professionals, that usually means a document of two to three pages, depending on the market. Despite the importance of getting it right, many people spend less time on their CV than they would on a standard site report. With hundreds of applicants for some roles, limited effort usually leads to limited results.

Bonus tip: Check for typos

Around 80 percent of CVs contain spelling or grammar mistakes. Use proofreading tools, read your CV aloud, and ask someone else to review it before sending it. In a competitive construction market, accuracy really does make a difference.

In short, no. At least not on its own.

While using AI might seem like a quick fix, most hiring professionals now see it as a red flag. In fact, 80 percent of hiring managers say they dislike seeing AI-generated CVs or cover letters, and 74 percent believe they can tell when AI has been used.

Some recruiters are now actively filtering out AI-written CVs. Employers such as the Big Four and FTSE 100 firms are reportedly banning AI-generated applications for certain roles, especially at graduate level. AI detection software is already being sold to recruiters and adopted in hiring processes, which is something we predicted months ago.

The problem is that AI-written CVs often just mimic the job description. They look neat on the surface but lack substance. They tend to rehash weak or generic value propositions and rarely include real-world achievements. Even if they tick keyword boxes, they fail to prove value.

Recruiters are already complaining about getting hundreds of near-identical CVs, many of which are generated by AI.

The only way to rise above this is with a CV full of meaningful examples and tangible outcomes. Our methodology, based on real experience, achievements, and strategic targeting, consistently outperforms AI and DIY approaches.

One recent client had been struggling in the job market with an AI-written CV. After switching to our method, he landed an interview with his very first application for a brilliant role.
