Your Value Proposition: The Most Important Thing You’ve Probably Never Written

If you are serious about your career – whether you’re chasing your next executive role, building a portfolio career, or simply trying to raise your profile – you need a value proposition.

Not just for your CV, not just for LinkedIn, but because it’s the core of your personal brand. It tells recruitment decision-makers exactly why they should consider you for any given role you apply for.

Most people don’t have one. Or they think they do, but it’s really just a vague, woolly and ambiguous description that underwhelms. And that’s a problem, because when everyone sounds the same, nobody stands out. You don’t get hired for being vanilla – in ice cream terms, you get hired for being double chilli chocolate🧯.

What is a Value Proposition?

A value proposition statement (VPS) is a one-line professional statement that explains:

1. What you are

2. What you do

3. What that delivers

It’s not a job title. Not a biography. And definitely not “25 years’ experience across multiple industries”.

It’s your core professional identity, shaped around the needs, pains and priorities of your target audience. It’s what sits at the heart of your personal brand and positions you as a credible, commercial solution to a real-world problem.

If you get it right, it becomes the golden thread that runs through your CV, LinkedIn profile, bio, interview answers, and elevator pitch.

Here are some alternative ways to look at a value proposition…

◼️ Your professional headline and biggest selling point

◼️ Your unique selling point and foundation of your elevator pitch

◼️ The value you are proposing to offer a future employer

◼️ THE key thing that you do to drive value – not ONE of the things you do

◼️ Your ‘why you’ statement – the reason someone picks you over the competition

A quick story

I recently ran a session for an organisation representing some of the world’s top execs preparing for Board roles. We did a deep dive into personal branding, and at the centre of it was the value proposition.

We discussed different boardroom scenarios. High-growth scale-ups, PE-backed turnarounds, family-owned businesses, and international PLCs. We explored how to align a VPS with things like industry, growth phase, culture, functional gaps, and board dynamics.

And still, most people came back with:

“I’m a dynamic leader with 25 years’ experience across multiple industries in a range of roles.”

That’s not a VPS. That’s a cliché. It tells us nothing. It just sounds like everyone else. It may as well have said, “I’m mid-forties and have had a relatively senior job”.

It’s all about them!

A good tip to remember is that your value proposition isn’t about you. It’s about the person deciding whether to hire you, i.e., them.

To write a VPS that actually resonates, you need to get under the skin of your target audience. What’s keeping them awake at night? What outcomes are they under pressure to deliver? What gaps are they trying to fill?

It’s often finely nuanced, factoring in organisation type, industry context, business phase, functional pressure points, Board dynamics, and sector challenges.

And you can't be all things to all people. One generic VPS won’t cut through. The more tailored it is, the more powerful it becomes, so having more than one VPS is typically what’s needed (if there are different types of roles you are targeting).

So, how do we create one?

The formula

When it’s done well, a VPS answers three things:

1. What are you? – Aligned with how the role is defined

2. What do you do? – The core outcome or problem you solve

3. What value does that bring? – Commercial or strategic results

A few examples

✏️ COO & Operational Catalyst – delivers robust operational infrastructure across people, processes and systems, enabling efficiency and best-in-class service that drives commercial performance.

✏️ CTO & Digital Innovator – leads the adoption of transformative technologies, integrating AI and automation to turn legacy operations into modern, scalable platforms that underpin growth.

✏️ Commercial Director & Market Maker – builds services, strategy and infrastructure to break into untapped markets and generate first-mover advantage.

✏️ CEO & Strategic Growth Leader – shapes vision, culture and operating models to ensure sustained growth, brand relevance and market leadership in fast-moving sectors.

Each one is clear, commercial/strategic, and relevant to organisations with real problems to solve.

Why AI can’t do this for you

There’s a lot of noise about using AI to write CVs and profiles. But no AI tool can uncover your true value proposition. It can reword a job description or repackage your career history, but it can’t tap into the psychology of a hiring manager or surface the one thing you do that truly moves the dial.

This work requires commercial understanding, intelligent questioning, and often a bit of magic.
