Let’s be honest. AI is the shiny new toy everyone wants to play with.
You might think you can just paste your old CV into ChatGPT, ask it to "make me sound like a rockstar," and sit back while the job offers roll in.
I hate to rain on your parade, but it doesn't work like that.
What is actually happening in the marketplace right now is a bunfight of identical applications. Recruiters are wading through masses of "identikit" CVs that look good on the surface but say absolutely nothing about the individual behind them.
The "Style Over Substance" Trap
AI is brilliant at grammar. It is terrible at evidence.
When you ask AI to rewrite your CV, it usually just tweaks the skills and fluffs up the language. It creates a document that is "style over substance."
More worryingly, organisations are starting to push back. They are getting so many AI-generated applications that they are rejecting them out of hand.
Savvy recruiters can spot the robotic tone a mile off. But even if they can't, the technology can. There is software now that gives an estimation of how much AI has been used in a document. If that score is too high, it is game over.
The "Generic" CV Hits the Buffers
Broad, generic CVs just do not work anymore.
If you are describing yourself as an "experienced finance professional" or a "senior marketing leader," you are wasting your time. Nobody is searching for a "professional." They are searching for specific solutions to specific problems.
Your CV needs to be hyper-targeted. But most people don't do this because they think it takes forever to rewrite a CV for every single application.
This is where the Master CV comes in.
The Master CV Strategy
Instead of using AI to hallucinate a personality for you, you need a Master CV.
This is a document containing far more content than you would ever send to a single employer. It is your repository of success.
If we are writing a Master CV for a client, we might include up to eight STAR (Situation, Task, Actions, Result) case studies.
When you see a job you want, you don't rewrite your CV from scratch. You simply make a decision. Which three case studies from my Master CV are relevant to this specific role?
You "lift and shift" the relevant modules. You swap them in. You send it off.
It turns a painful rewriting process into a swift strategic decision.
The Hierarchy of What Matters
Here is a fact that might surprise you. Your "Career History" (the list of dates and companies) is only the fourth most important section of your CV.
The top three sections, the ones that actually secure the interview are:
The Tailored Intro: Specific to the role title (e.g., "Commercial Director," not "Business Professional").
The Key Skills: Matched to the job spec.
The Evidence: Your STAR case studies.
AI hasn't got the faintest idea what you have actually achieved. It cannot generate evidence. Only you can do that.
Conclusion
Don't blame the technology, but don't rely on it to save a bad strategy.
If you want to beat the algorithm and the human reviewer, stop looking for shortcuts. Build a Master CV, fill it with evidence, and tailor it like a sniper, not a machine gun.
Q&A: Optimising Your CV Strategy
What is a Master CV? A Master CV is a comprehensive document that acts as a database of your career. It contains every skill, every achievement, and multiple case studies (we recommend up to eight). You never send this document to a recruiter. Instead, you use it as a source to create shorter, highly targeted CVs for specific applications.
Why is AI bad for CV writing? AI is excellent for checking grammar or suggesting structure, but it cannot invent facts (or at least, it shouldn't). Hiring managers want evidence of what you did. AI tends to produce generic fluff that lacks the specific metrics and commercial outcomes required to impress senior decision-makers.
How do I tailor my CV quickly? If you have a Master CV, tailoring is fast. You look at the job description, identify the top three competencies they need, and then "lift and shift" the matching case studies from your Master document into your live CV. It is a modular approach rather than a rewriting process.
Can recruiters really tell if I used AI? Yes. Experienced recruiters can often "smell" the generic, overly polished tone of AI. Furthermore, many applicant tracking systems (ATS) now integrate detection tools that flag documents with a high probability of being AI-generated.
Why is my Career History only the 4th most important section? Because attention spans are short. A recruiter decides whether to interview you based on the top half of the first page. This includes your headline, your profile summary, and your key achievements (evidence). By the time they get down to your chronological history, they have usually already made their decision.
