The Risks of Lying on Your CV The simple answer is no—you should never lie on your CV. Thorough due diligence by employers during the recruitment process will often reveal any inaccuracies. If you do manage to secure the role despite falsehoods, being unable to perform adequately due to misrepresented skills can lead to being fired. This creates a problematic gap on your CV that may raise questions in future interviews.
Omitting vs. Lying While lying is unacceptable, you are not obligated to disclose every detail, especially if it’s negative. For instance, if you were dismissed from a role, you can list the job without stating the reason for leaving. If asked during an interview, you can then explain your situation honestly without misrepresentation.
Integrity and Self-Promotion It’s essential to sell yourself confidently but avoid exaggerating to the point of misrepresentation. Maintaining integrity ensures that, if offered a role, you can fulfil its requirements effectively. This approach not only preserves your reputation but also prevents wasted time for both you and potential employers.
Background Checks and References Employers often conduct background checks and ask for references. They might verify educational qualifications or other key information after extending an offer. Misrepresentations can lead to a rescinded offer, wasting valuable time and damaging your professional credibility.
