Personal Branding Isn’t About Buzzwords
We often hear about personal branding as if it is some modern marketing gimmick, but the truth is that you already have one. Whether you are managing it intentionally or not, the people around you have formed an impression of who you are professionally.
That impression is your personal brand. It is not just about your job title or your LinkedIn profile picture. It is about how people perceive you, how they describe you when you are not in the room, and how they interpret your communication style, behaviour, and values.
You Are Always Sending a Message
The most important thing to understand is that your personal brand is always active. Every meeting you attend, every comment you make on LinkedIn, every presentation, email, or interaction adds to the image people have of you.
Early in your career, the focus is usually on doing a good job. And that matters. But being known for doing a good job is just as important. Many capable professionals are overlooked, not because they are not good enough, but because they have not made themselves visible in the right way.
Your Brand Reflects on Your Organisation Too
As you become more senior, your personal brand starts to reflect on your employer. If you are in a leadership position and visible in your industry, how you present yourself will inevitably be linked with your organisation’s reputation.
In that context, personal branding becomes a business issue as well as a personal one. The way you communicate, the topics you discuss publicly, and the example you set will all influence how people see both you and the organisation you represent.
It Is Not About Pretending. It Is About Clarity.
Personal branding is not about creating a polished version of yourself or trying to impress everyone. It is about being clear. Clear about what you stand for, what you offer, and how others benefit from working with you.
You could start by asking yourself a simple question. What three words or phrases would you like to be associated with your name? Once you have them, consider whether your current behaviour, communication, and online presence reflect those qualities.
Managing Your Brand Is Managing Your Reputation
At its core, personal branding is about reputation. Managing it means thinking carefully about how you show up. This includes:
How you communicate
The quality of your professional interactions
What you post or engage with online
How consistently you present your values
The image your LinkedIn profile conveys
None of this is about being loud or constantly promoting yourself. It is about consistency and credibility.
The Outcome? Trust and Opportunity
When your personal brand is strong, it builds trust. That trust gives you influence, and that influence leads to opportunity. Whether that means new career prospects, speaking engagements, collaborations, or simply being seen as a credible voice in your field, the benefits are clear.
Jeff Bezos summed it up well when he said, “Your personal brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.” The only question is whether you are actively shaping that narrative or leaving it to chance.
