Did you know that recruiters don’t actually see LinkedIn the same way you do?
Most contractors are unaware that recruiters use a dedicated platform called LinkedIn Recruiter. This tool is built for them to search, filter, and manage candidates, and it presents a very different view of your profile.
How do you really look in LinkedIn Recruiter’s ‘Pipeline’?
Inside LinkedIn Recruiter, the candidate view is stripped down compared to what you and I see, explains Matt Craven, founder of The CV & Interview Advisors.
Recruiters see a shortened “Pipeline” snapshot – just a few sections of your profile. These are the areas that contractors often neglect, yet they’re the only bits recruiters use to decide whether to click deeper or move on.
Why your About section isn’t saving you
If you don’t capture attention in those first moments, recruiters won’t click through. That means your carefully written “About” or detailed “Experience” sections might never even be read.
And given that LinkedIn is now the go-to platform for sourcing contractors, with many sectors relying on it more than traditional candidate databases, missing out here can cost you roles you’ll never even hear about.
LinkedIn: More than just networking
For recruiters, LinkedIn is a search tool first and foremost. They use it daily to find candidates for live roles.
If you’re not appearing in searches, or your profile doesn’t compel them to click, you’re already losing out - including on those hidden, unadvertised contract opportunities.
Think of LinkedIn as your shop window
As someone who reviews CVs and rewrites LinkedIn profiles, I’d say this: your profile is your online shopfront.
A weak or poorly optimised page is like having a shop on the high street with the shutters pulled down. Or worse, it’s like running a website without SEO - you exist, but no one can find you.
That’s why the small number of visible sections in LinkedIn Recruiter need to do the heavy lifting.
Three things your profile must communicate instantly
As a contractor, your profile needs to convey straight away:
your positioning
your value proposition
your professional worth
In other words, those key sections must build a business case that says, “hire me.” Recruiters often need to fill contract roles quickly, so that first impression can determine whether you’re shortlisted or ignored.
Too many contractor profiles look like employee CVs
The problem? Many contractors’ profiles are written like a junior employee’s CV. They list responsibilities reasonably well but fail to:
highlight tangible achievements
quantify the value delivered
put forward a clear value proposition
Without these, your profile won’t win you premium contracts in a crowded market.
FAQs: LinkedIn for IT Contractors
1. Do recruiters see the same LinkedIn profiles that I do?
No. Recruiters use a tool called LinkedIn Recruiter, which shows a simplified snapshot of your profile in their “Pipeline” view. This version highlights only certain sections of your profile, which is why optimising the right areas is so important.
2. Which sections of my profile are visible in LinkedIn Recruiter?
Only a handful of sections appear in the initial recruiter view — things like your headline, current role, and recent experience. If these don’t clearly communicate your value, recruiters may not click through to see the rest of your profile.
3. Why isn’t my About section getting noticed?
Recruiters often decide whether to look deeper within seconds. If your profile doesn’t stand out in the Pipeline view, they won’t even get as far as reading your About section, no matter how well-written it is.
4. How important is LinkedIn for contractors compared to job boards?
In many sectors, LinkedIn has replaced traditional candidate databases. Recruiters rely on it daily to source contractors, making it the most important platform to optimise.
5. What mistakes do contractors often make on LinkedIn?
Three common errors are:
Listing responsibilities without showing achievements
Failing to quantify value with numbers and results
Not presenting a clear value proposition
6. How can I make my profile more appealing to recruiters?
Focus on communicating your positioning, value proposition, and professional worth in the sections visible on LinkedIn Recruiter. Think of your profile as your shop window - it needs to attract attention straight away.
7. What’s the risk of not optimising my LinkedIn profile?
You could be invisible to recruiters, even if you’re technically on LinkedIn. That means missing out on roles, including hidden contract opportunities that never get advertised publicly.
