These days, it’s often machines — not people — rejecting CVs. And it’s worth reinforcing this crucial point: it’s the CV being rejected, not you as an individual.
Of course, it’s natural to take rejection personally, especially when applying for jobs or contract work. But unless you’re already known by the hiring organisation — which is arguably a tougher situation — it’s not you they’re turning down. It’s your document. It’s your message.
The job market is highly competitive across most sectors right now, which means you need a CV that truly stands out. The bottom line: you need to be in the top 20% — the group with CVs that actually work.
Now, you might be wondering: Do I have an effective CV? Am I one of the 20%… or stuck in the 80% pile?
Fortunately, there’s a simple way to find out — particularly if you’re active in the job market. Let’s say you apply for ten roles. If you get ten interviews, your CV is doing its job. But if you’re getting zero interviews, despite knowing full well that you could do the work, then there’s a problem. And the problem lies with your marketing message — your CV / resume, your LinkedIn profile, or a combination of all three.
This is one of the most reliable ways to assess whether your CV is genuinely effective. And it’s far more insightful than listening to subjective opinions. If someone — a recruiter, a friend, or a colleague — tells you that your CV is good, take it with a pinch of salt. It might simply be that they know you, they’re familiar with your work, and they could easily recommend you to others. But that’s not the same as having a technically strong CV.
A technically strong CV stands on its own. It secures interviews with organisations where nobody knows you. No internal advocate, no inside track — just your CV getting you in the door. That’s the gold standard.
Some people assume they have a strong CV simply because they’ve worked for big-name companies. While having reputable organisations on your CV certainly helps, it doesn’t automatically make the document strong. Prestige alone won’t do the heavy lifting — the structure, messaging, and clarity of your CV need to do that for you.
